Actually it was mainly at the next hairpin at Delavigne. Kate McGarrigle's back windows looked out on that spot.
My old neighbourhood from 1960 on. My mother sold the house in '99. Nice shots of Murray Park as well.
Westmount police were tough on kids. They'd chase you off the sidewalks if they caught you riding your bike there. Was once humiliated for sailing my boat in the wrong pond at Westmount Park.
Mt. Pleasant avenue was once the driveway to Mount Pleasant estate, whose house became part of the armoury on Atwater, still there but later jumbled into that Lepine development. Back in the 1870s (guessing the date of the house) Atwater didn't go much further than St. Catherine and Sherbrooke didn't extend that far west. So Mt. Pleasant's drive went west on high ground (Delavigne), then gently swept down to reach the nearest road at the top of what's now Greene and Sherbrooke. In those days both were part of Cote St. Antoine Road.
The next street west of Mt. Pleasant is Rosemount avenue, which was the private drive of the Rosemount estate, whose house is still sitting on Severn Ave. But they started selling off their land early because the oldest house on the flat part of Rosemount dates to c. 1867.
Westmount and has continued to "re-invent" some its streets.
Recently the short stretch of Summit Crescent between Devon Avenue and the section of Kingston Road (to the immediate west of St. Joseph's Oratory) was transformed into a gravel-topped path for pedestrians and cyclists. Barrier-posts block motorized vehicles from entering or parking along there anymore as they used to do.
Likewise the formerly paved road section of Summit Circle east of Oakland Avenue is similarly gravel-covered up until where those few private houses exist to the west of Summit Road. Prior to the change, the former road was a favourite stretch for local drunken teenagers to speed at night. There had even been some fires set in the underbrush.
Aside from this, for some inexplicable reason the bird sanctuary, forested area behind the Westmount Lookout continues to be poorly maintained. Too many dead and rotted trees which had collapsed or are on the verge of doing so have not been removed and various fungus-afflicted and diseased trees are left standing as well.
In addition, despite the various warning signs, some people insist on allowing their dogs to run off-leash in and around there. Police patrols rarely, if ever, venture into the forest to warn or ticket such scofflaws.
Is Westmount negligent or simply too cheap to address these issues?
Can anyone in Westmount reading this supply us with answers?
