This is, of course, is Mederic Martin whose wikipedia page I personally penned after reading a hilarious Standard essay that ran about the guy in the 1930s.
I'll try to dig it up from my pile one day. He served as Mayor for 12 years between 1914 and 1928, having been voted out from '24 to '26. He broke the alternating system of English and French mayors, which is probably okay because several areas in the French part of the island were brought into the city around 1911, so he was sorta demographically justified, even though he wasn't much liked or particularly remembered or even respected, judging from what is written about him.
Martin signing something with an incredibly complicated pen contraption which sadly, never seems to have caught on.

ReplyDeleteThe money from his estate is still funding the band concerts in city parks during the summer, (the Campbell concerts) run by the city. Used to be entirely brass bands, now some variance and different kinds of music.
