Debbie Buck - murder in Mirabel

Debbie Buck's murder in a field in Mirabel November 19, 1976. has never been solved. It was one of those terribly depressing stories from Montreal in the 70s of which there seems no shortage. I'm posting about it because it would be nice to see the killer apprehended.
Her callous and unspeakably unnecessary murder was in the same vein as that of Debbie Fischer or Sharon Prior. She was born to a black father from Nova Scotia and a blonde German mother who also fathered her sister Jackie. Her mom remarried a local traffic 'copter radio reporter Keith Randall and had two more children. Debbie switched her name to Randall but then returned to her father's name, Buck.
She ran away and/or was put into a foster home at 13 and ended up allegedly becoming the lover of a 30 year old man, a muscular black man from Nova Scotia who worked at the CN. He was said by many to be charming and kind and gentle. But theirs was a sometimes tempestuous relationship but she had his child. He bought a crib and made a home for Debbie and the child.
There was some discord eventually however and it has been suggested that she had left him with the baby at the time of her death. But the boyfriend was apparently not considered a suspect in the murder.

Debbie was tall, pretty, had white skin in spite of her black roots, which she identified with. She always wore skirts, often long leather gloves and scarves, never pants. She did some modeling and never drank, her only vice being an occasional toke of marijuana at her home on Millar in St. Laurent City.
Debbie Buck's daughter also died young.
So when she was found in a field with a bullet hole in her skull and a branch stuffed inside of her it wasn't entirely clear why this would have happened. Police believe she was killed while buying a bag of marijuana. Apparently she might have wanted to resell some marijuana to fund her new life. Police might've believed it to be a drug burn.
The baby Debbie never got to see grow up, Tanya, was raised by the man who fathered her child, along with that man's mother.
In a spooky coincidence, baby Tanya eventually grew up and became a mother at 18 and also died at 18. She perished in a car accident on the Jacques Cartier Bridge, and may or may not have been enduring a stormy moment with the father of her child, who was at the wheel.
That baby, Debbie's grandchild, now also 18, apparently named Cain, will hopefully make it through the age of 18.

Buck was not the only dead woman found dead with a tree branch stuffed in her vagina. On August 2, 1975
Diane Thibault, 25, was found dead in am empty lot at St. Dominique and Dorchester. It was unclear where or when she was killed but detectives deduced that the killer returned at about 4 a.m. to set her body on fire.
Thibault was a single mother on welfare who originally came from St. Jerome and had a two-year-old son Stephane.
She was said to have frequented bars and cabarets on the Lower Main.

  1. Debbie Fisher's killer was caught and sentenced, he was a teenage boy who beat her to death. Sharon Prior's killer was never caught.

I knew Debbie well. The night before she died she came by my house to pickup her "pearl" ring that I had borrowed. The next day, I was reading the Journal de Montreal and saw that the media were seeking help in identifying a body. I saw the ring that had been magnified in the paper and called Jackie-my best friend, Debbie's sister. Ihad her come to my house and from there we notified the police. It was a tragic story, and it change my life and Jackie's life. Jackie went from being a vibrant beautiful woman to a woman who turned to drugs to get by in life. I haven't seen her since I left Montreal, but have been touch with her younger sister. I know that Jackie is not doing well, and I miss the old Jackie. She has never gotten over her sister' murder.
