West End Gang assassin - how he was killed

Jackie McLaughlin was a West End Gang assassin and bodyguard to Duney Ryan to whom he once demonstrated his loyalty by coordinating the assassination of four coked-out bikers who had plotted to kidnap Ryan's young son and daughter.
McLaughlin was brutally murdered by his friend Noel Winters, who then killed McLaughlin's girlfriend Maria Hillebrand and their pitbull and buried their bodies in his backyard. Winters hanged himself in jail days later.
Hillebrand, a German immigrant, started going out with McLaughlin after meeting him while she worked as a waitress at the Cavalier on St. James Street West.
Here's the tale: a short but muscular drug dealer named Giggy Dow was making a drug deal with a biker. The drugs were to be resold in New Brunswick. The biker had to fetch his stash.

The biker's girlfriend waited with Giggy Dow and the two smoked up and sniffed cocaine. Dow then beat her and raped her and fled town.
Jackie McLaughlin went to St. John and stabbed Giggy Dow to death as retribution for the rape and beating of the woman. A woman saw this happen and eventually told her friend about it in the presence of a psychotic murderer named Noel Winters. Winters was friends with Giggy Dow and two had been in the same drug operation.
Here's what one Montrealer with considerable experience in the underworld tells Coolopolis about Noel Winters:
Noel Winters who I personally had a beef with, was not an underworld figure rather, he was a paranoid schizophrenic. who became delusional after excessive cocaine use. He even tried to rob me once. He heard voices all the time. Sad case. Grew up in Saint John slums, which is the worse shit-hole in Canada-highest with the rate of birth defects and he couldn't read or write like most Saint John criminals. They all went to the notorious King's Clear Reformatory where the guards would sodomize all the kids under 13.
McLaughlin had already befriended Winters as he had to hang around St. John to track down Dow and it's a small town. So when McLaughlin faced some heat in Montreal he decided to stay with his girlfriend for a while in St. John. One day an unsuspecting McLaughlin was sitting next to Winters, who simply stuck a knife into his ribs and killed him as revenge for killing Giggy Dow. Winters then went to the cabin and killed McLaughlin's girlfriend. It's a horrifying and brutal story.
The story is laid out in Brian O'Neill's Bodies in the Backyard, an impressive little book that is so rare that it has some value now. The author himself had a criminal past and later got into trouble for snooping around too closely in the Paul Bernardo murders. Would love to hear from O'Neill wherever he is now.

  2. Nitpicking but St. John should always be spelled "Saint John" without the Saint being abbreviated. St John's Newfoundland is always spelled with the St. abbreviated. I've heard there is actually a bylaw in Saint John that regulates all signs in the city saying that Saint can never be abbreviated.

    1. justin, because its a proper pronoun, Saint John is the name of the city. I'm pretty sure the river is Saint too, but maybe someone messed up on some local signs. If you google it spelt either way, it comes up "Saint John River"

FYI St. John river is 400 miles long, not named after the city Saint John.

    1. Google both spellings and see what comes up.
(for everyone else, it comes up Saint John)
Canada is so full of people spreading misinformation these day, it literally makes me sad and want to force the ones as ignorant and stubborn as americans down to live with them.
P.S.: not a direct personal attack on you, I'm just tired of people always "knowing" their 100% right and thinking they know everything so they dont have to learn or change their own ways.

  9. The story on Noel Winters..it's more on selling the book than the real truth about what happened and why it happened.

I was in prison with noel in black river road when I was 16, we were in remand together...he had already committed the murders of his best friend and his dad, over a beer...and nobody knew, the author saying he killed himself a little while later is way off. always love ppl that write books and take artistic leave of reality.

  13. I scanned about 60 pages of the book and had it posted somewhere for a while but it was an unreliable host and I don't think it's anywhere now, not even on my hard drive.
I was more interested in Jake the Snake so not even sure I had even scanned the chapters you'd be interested in. Write me at megaforce@gmail.com if you want to figure something out.

  26. Please excuse me. Noel Had a brother. His name was Alan. He left Saint John many years ago for Vancouver. I knew Noel quite well. I also know Brian O'Neil. If you are depending on Brian for your information you are sadly mistaken. Everything that comes out of Brian's mouth is brown as in shi_! I also knew Qiggey Dow and the two victims that met their fate at Noels house. Quiggey was a pig period. The other two knew better but ...Noel was notorious for problems with hard alcohol. Beer was ok but hard alcohol not. Both of his victims knew that as did the rest of their family. It turned out to be a very sad situation. Noel had sworn that he would never go back to prison. The three had been drinking for almost three days. They were playing with guns and one got shot in the leg. Noel made the decision to kill them because if he took them to the hospital he would have gone back to prison. Sad but true. In reality Noel was a gentleman but lived in the criminal world and lived by that code. I knew him for years and as bad as it seems I respect him for the way he conducted himself. He did not rat out others and went out in his own way. He would not have survived in prison as it as full of Hell's Angels looking for revenge.

  27. Im from Saint John, I grew up there, my Dad knew Noel from some dealings with Pat Rocca, boxed at Golden Gloves with Eddie as well as the Hickeys, and friends with Pat Griifin, tho havent seen in years. Noel had two sides, a gentleman and psycopath. His scraps and criminal behavior far pre-dates the murders..he was fearless and it cost him n others in the end. Nobody hung Noel, like my Dad said, " there arent any men alive who could get Noel's head in any noose "
