Verdun's embarrassing spelling mistake

Verdun made a spelling mistake on a prominent street sign that has gone unrepaired for years, as John Davidson noted on his Vanishing Montreal site.
The name Egan does not take an accent and in spite of what's written it's not an avenue, but it's a street, according to Davidson.
This sign at Verdun and Egan (one west of Woodland) is the only Egan sign to have such mistakes, apparently.
It's likely that nobody ever complained about this, so there was no pressure to fix it. This morning I phoned in a complaint, (although I wasn't given a file number, so perhaps it was not filed officially). Let's watch to see if the city addresses it.
About 15 years ago I bought a sixplex through a broker named John Snow, an older gentleman at the nearby Egan Realties. Good building and nice guy that Snow. We had a few mutual acquaintances in the form of Johnny Tibbo, and his son Robert and his daughter who married a guy who wore a cape to their wedding.

  1. Just to clarify my thinking, can you tell me when Egan became a street ? I recall it as always having been an avenue, I only say that because I sort of remember when I lived in Verdun 50 years ago , that Egan was referred to as Egan Avenue. like Osborne Avenue , Woodland avenue , etc etc . This street designation would be something I was unaware of. Otherthan DesMarchais Blvd. I cannot recall a street running off of Wellington Street , or Lasalle Blvd or Verdun Ave.
Any further info would be greatly appreciated , Ahh. I really hope all those years in Verdun are not being lost to a version of early onset..........Cheers ! always great to visit your site:

  3. A few years ago, Beaconsfield erected a sign for "Angel" Avenue, as if it was the Stairway to Heaven, instead of being named for local prominent Anglo farming family, the Angells, who were behind many local institutions, such as the founding of Beaurepaire United Church. A quick e-mail to then-mayor David Pollock got the offending sign replaced.

  4. I grew up on Egan as a small child, and it was an avenue.

  5. According to Google Maps, Egan is an "avenue" north of the Aqueduct (Montreal), and a "rue" south of it (Verdun).

In the Lovell's directories, both parts are always referred to as "Avenues" - from the 1920's to the last one available online from 2000.

  6. The photograph shows Verdun as "rue de" I grew up knowing it as Verdun Avenue ...... unless it is just the light, it looks as if the "rue de" designation may have been pasted over whatever was there to begin with - avenue, perhaps?
