MARKET MAY REPLACE OLD BUILDINGS UNDER BRIDGE
Intimation was received today that the Montreal Harbor Commission is seriously considering the conversion into a public market of land being made available through the demolition of buildings on their property near the new Harbor Bridge at Delormier Ave. The picture indicates some of the work now going on. J.H. RAINVILLE, president and chairman of the Commission, admitted that the project has been brought to the attention of the Commissioners and that it is being discussed, but quickly pointed out that the work of clearing the site had been forced by the decay of the buildings themselves.
Wreckers are now at work tearing down buildings owned by the Commission in an area extending between Dorion street and Delormier avenue and Craig and St. Catherine streets. Though the whole property extends as far north in that section to Burnett street, mostly owned by the Commission, wrecking will be confined for the present in the prescribed district, the president said.
Some of the tenants on the site are still occupying their buildings, and will continue to do so until May 1. The ground will be paved after the wrecking is finished, but whether the City or the Commission itself is to bear this expense, has not been decided. It is expected that this question will be decided by and largely hinges on whether the Commission decides to allow the property to be used as a market. This is an undated pic. From caption it looks like 1930 or 1931.
PASSENGERS ACROSS NEW BRIDGE WILL GET STRIKING VIEW OF CITY
To the insect on the ground a blade of grass is a tree and a field is an illimitable forest. To the man in Delormier street today the houses are so high that the street is the world. But let him mount to the New Bridge and he will see the city as a swooping eagle sees the earth.
The first thing that is brought forcibly to his notice is the fact that something will want doing about the roofs. For anyone standing on the street, a "beautiful face is an open letter of introduction," as Schopenhauer said speaking of women. From the height of the bridge, however, the beauty of a building will be measured by the beauty of its roof.
The bridge itself will in time transform the view men get from it; but from here today three sights strike one right away. The first is the Notre Dame Hospital--a work of mercy. The second is the university--a place of learning. The third is that dark mass where no building is--the old military cemetery; you may call it an empty tomb. Skyscrapers may rise to veil them from view, but as long as Montreal lasts they will have to be features of its life---mercy, wisdom and eternity. Undated pic shows Montreal Mayor ADHEMAR RAYNAULT and former Montreal Canadiens owner LEO DANDURAND. Names on back of pic. No caption info. Looks to me by background like they were attending someone's funeral, maybe in the 1930's or 40's (just a guess).
